More Pictures along the way - March 31, San Francisco

San Francisco is a great city. Our tour gave me a chance to see some of the sites that I have taken Diane past but never really had a chance to see myself. Unfortunately, being on the bus, there wasn't a lot of opportunity to take pictures. However, there were two photo stops, one at the Golden Gate Bridge and one at Twin Peaks.

While we were waiting for the tour bus, we wandered around the pocket park across from Ghiardelli Square and admired the bay. I of course had to try and get a picture of Sausalito which is one of our favorite places to go for coffee and sit and look across the bay back at San Francisco. Sausalito is the group of buildings in the right portion of the picture below. It is just down from the Golden Gate Bridge.

I like this picture because in addition to the bridge, there is a picture of the fence below the bridge to the right of the building where several years ago, when in San Francisco visiting Jim, he took us down there at sunset and we discovered that one of the running clubs uses that fence as the turn around point for their evening run. It was kind of funny to watch the people run up, touch the fence, turn around and head back without even noticing the gorgeous view and sunset.

There was also a great view of Alcatraz from the vista point by the bridge which just whetted our appetite for our planned visit to that Rock in the afternoon.

The view from Twin Peaks is so amazing, it is hard to get a picture of just part of San Francisco. The skyline below is a small piece of the skyline cropped from a much more expansive view. On the right is Coit Tower and toward the left is the TransAmerica needle.
Dian and I with the city by the sea behind us.
As we approached Alcatraz by boat, this is the imposing view that greeted us.
The sign you can see in the picture above. Diane said she didn't think she could help me if I got caught escaping. Here is one of the rooms at the famous Alcatraz Hotel. Not where I would like to stay.

The Alcatraz Lighthouse with the shell of the wardens quarters in the background.
Here is one of the guard towers on Alcatraz. The guards were up there for 8 hour shifts. The view of San Francisco from Alcatraz Island. If the prisoners ever got out of the building, this is the view they had. I think it would make them even more unhappy with where they were.
