More Pictures along the way - April 18th - Astoria,OR to Quinault, WA

Today, Friday the 18th, we crossed over into Washington state. I had seen on the map that there was a lighthouse out at Cape Disappointment. We found the location for the North Head lighthouse and started down to see it. About halfway down, the hail and rain started so we headed back to the car for our umbrellas. After our false start, we started out again. Looking south on our way to the lighthouse was a good view of a beach. As we rounded the bend, you could see the top of the lighthouse.

The lighthouse is still working but is not manned at this point.

Diane from the location of the lighthouse. Note the muddy surf down below. First muddy surf we have seen up to now it has been clear and colorful. From the North Head lighthouse, we headed over to Cape Canby, the original official name of the Cape area. There are remains of Fort Canby and behind that is the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center.
The Cape Disappointment lighthouse stands on the tip of a point just to the south of the Interpretive center. There are two lighthouses in this area because the ships traveling south to the Columbia River could not see the Cape Disappointment lighthouse soon enough and could run aground so they build the North Head Lighthouse to warn them to stay out from the shore longer. The Cape Disappointment lighthouse took longer to complete than planned because one of the ships carrying building materials for the lighthouse ran aground just off the coast. No lighthouse yet to warn them.
A raft of Cormorants just below the Cape Disappointment lighthouse
Cormorants on the rocks below the lighthouse.
By now you probably realize that I like waves crashing against the rocks. These waves are crashing against the rocks just below the lighthouse.
As we headed north out of Raymond I saw this boat moored along a pier across the river.
There was one more lighthouse (woo hoo! Three lighthouses in one day. This was about the only thing worth taking a picture of between Raymond and Lake Quinault lodge where we were going to spend the next couple of days.

Tomorrow we will be at Lake Quinault Lodge and hope to see some great sites.
