More Pictures along the way - April 8th - Mendocino

Well, I finally decided to post some of the pictures from our day walkng the headlands in Mendocino. It was hard to decide which photos to include but decided to primarily try and show the natural beauty of the headlands, ocean and coast around there.

This is the headlands from across Mendocino bay looking Northwest.

As we started our walk, I was caught by the waves crashing against the coastal headlands. You will see many more from different areas of the headlands.
Diane near the beginning of our day on the headlands with me looking south. This is looking west out to the Pacific admiring the amazing colors and the waves breaking over the rocks.
One of the may areas where the surf has eroded away at the coast. There is a log about 12-15 feet long at the tomp of the area by the waters edge.
More waves crashing. Impossible to catch the beauty with the camera.
As we were watching one particular area of turbulent surf, we noticed this sea lion swimming around. We trust that he wanted to be there and was either playing or looking for food.

Diane at one of the totems on the southside of the headlands. Mendocino in the background.
Here is a series of three pictures showing a blowhole and the wave action coming in.

Another view of Mendocino from one of the points on the south side of the headlands looking northeast.
As we moved around the southside of the headlands, it got to be after lunchtime. We were both getting tired of walking when we came to the remnants of the old pier. Diane took the opportunity to relax for a moment.
There are a lot of wild flowers growing in the area. I tried to capture a few as we moved through the area.
This is looking north, just before we broke for lunch. I liked the seagulls playing in the air currents. We saw a lot of the gulls and other birds playing in the air currents along the coast at different points along the coast.
Another shot looking north just before our lunch break.
I really liked the breaking waves and the vibrant colors of greens and blues. Some of the pictures of the waves breaking look fake to me. They look like some of the pictures I have seen over the years where I have wondered what the artist was doing as their painting didn't look real to me. Well, that is really how nature paints reality. I was amazed.
I am facinated by the natural tunnels that nature has created by eroding out around the rocky areas and washing under and through to create amazing sculptures.
This is one of the areas that the sea has washed away all the connections to the mainland. Again there are amazing colors and the waves come in and break. We were amazed at how clear the water was. We could stand and look down and see bottom where it was probabl 10-15 feet deep.
We went out on many of the narrow points to get better views. Some of the ways out were quite narrow with dropoffs on either side.
Another view of one of the rocky islands (there is probably a better name for them but I am at a loss).
Looking out to the northwest. On the left is the headlands. On the right are two "rocky islands".
Diane admiring the awesome view to the north.
Looking to the northeast we could see the bed and breakfast where we were staying. There is a rocky point protruding out into the sea in front of the B&B, there is not that much lawn in front of it.
Here is the Cabrillo Point light house taken from the headlands. It was several miles away but I was able to catch it with its light shining towards us.
Here is a closer view of our B&B.

This is the blowhole that Diane mentioned that sent up enough spray to hit our glasses and camera lenses. It was pretty amazing.
More of the natural beauty growing there.
Looking to the west through the trees just as we came back from exploring the last point, closest to our B&B. Then we had to walk 1/2 mile back to the car.
There were too many clouds to have a colorful sunset with reds and oranges but it was still beautiful.
And finally, the view from our balcony as darkness set in.

We had an awesome day. If you ever have the chance to visit Mendocino, California, take the time to walk around the headlands and enjoy the beauty and serenity.
